INFORMATION
The goal of the course is to promote
safety. I try to hit as many topics as possible
in the time allowed, which is why I try to do an
entire weekend workshop now, rather than one evening
talk. There is a lot to cover.
The course primarily targets canopy skills and understanding
as the primary subject matter, from the perspective
of a parachute designer. I will, however, adapt
the class to incorporate anything the hosts believe
to be appropriate, as well as shaping the subject
matter to fit each particular group of students.
I also include information on the psychology of
survival in high stress situations, a topic on which
I have done a great amount of research. I can also
include a copy of my new book: "The Parachute
and its Pilot" for each of the participants.
We often include jumping in the course, but it isn't
necessary at all. The bulk of the learning is in
the classroom, not the air. If we do go that route,
I will provide specific jump objectives, as well
as providing video debrief of landings.
I strongly recommend having video of each participant's
landing prior to the course. This will deepen the
discussions, even if the weather does not work out
for jumping.
The course fee is $195 per student, and the DZ management or host
arranges my transportation, as well as reasonable
accommodations. This can include crashing at someone's
house, or other cost-effective avenue. It has become
standard procedure for the host to charge more than
$195 in order to cover my travel expenses.
Minimum class size is 10 participants. There is
no maximum number of students, although more than
20 participants should include a third day.
I highly suggest booking well in advance of the
planned date of the course, as the demand for this
has become quite high worldwide. Emailing your jumpers
with the course dates and details no less than one
month before the course is essential.

Emotional
Factors in Aviation Safety
A Seminar by Brian Germain
Fear is the one aspect of aviation that is not
adequately addressed. When we analyze and accident,
we look at empirical data, logic and decision trees,
and mostly neglect to account for psycho-emotional
factors. The emotional state of a pilot is a core
determining factor in whether or not they are able
to make the correct decisions in the event of an
emergency.
The ability to work amidst a climate of hot emotions
is essential for safe flying. Through understanding
of the derivation of fear and of its inner workings,
we can develop coping mechanisms that allow an individual
to maintain a state of calm focus, and regain this
state when balance is lost. This “Chill Affinity”
can make the difference in whether a pilot seizes
up in panic, or focuses on the problems and finds
solutions.
Fear is fire in the cockpit. You do not put a fire
out with more heat, you do it with water. Through
repetitive training of emergency procedures, we
can map out a clear path through danger, but this
is but one edge of a double edge sword with which
we battle panic. The other aspect of training must
involve the development of a connection to the state
of calmness and inner focus. This is honed through
the practice of mindfulness/awareness training.
Specific techniques will be discussed.

Advanced
Course
A Seminar by Brian Germain
Swooping
has become the hottest new branch of our sport.
With increased speed comes increased danger. As
with all dangerous activities, there is a way. If
you know the way, there is no significant danger.
If you do not, you are playing with fire with gasoline-soaked
gloves.
The Advanced Camp targets increasing safety and
skills in high speed approaches and landings. The
secrets to setting up, diving in and getting the
most out of your energy are the focus of this three
day course. In-air training and video debriefing
are supplemented with a hearty dose of aerodynamic
theory, design and navigational technique.
Although helpful, it is unnecessary
to have attended one of Brian’s basic courses
as a pre-requisite to the advanced course. Prior
reading of The Parachute and its Pilot is also extremely
helpful in order to get a head-start on the material.
